LEBANON, Tenn. – Bradley Williams scored in the 33rd minute and Trevecca Nazarene helped out with an own goal late in the first half, as Cumberland hung on to defeat TNU, 2-1, in men’s soccer action Tuesday night in Nashville, Tenn.
Williams scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Harry Mason to give CU (6-5-2, 1-2-1 TranSouth) a 1-0 advantage in the 33rd minute. Just before the half Robert Boyd’s strike hit off the leg of TNU’s Brandon McKay and chipped over the keeper’s head into the net for a 2-0 CU lead at intermission.
Donny Maciel converted a penalty kick in the 70th minute for the Trojans goal, but CU keeper Matthew Shattuck made five saves for the victory. TNU posted a 13-8 advantage in shots, with Trojans goalie Brandon Coffman recording three saves.
Cumberland plays at Martin Methodist at 3 p.m. on Saturday before returning home for its final two regular season matches – October 25 versus Union University and November 1 against Freed-Hardeman – both at 3 p.m.
