LEBANON, Tenn. – Josh Armstrong scored a goal and assisted on another, as Cumberland netted four goals in the first half in a 4-0 victory over Georgetown College in men’s soccer action Saturday in Georgetown, Ky.
The Phoenix (9-6-1, 5-2-0 Mid-South) secured the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament that begins this Friday in Bowling Green, Ky., and will likely face the Tigers (4-9-4, 1-4-2) again Friday. The tournament bracket will be announced late Tuesday.
Armstrong got Cumberland on the board in the 15th minute with an assist from Elliot Goodwin and Alex Marr dribbled from midfield past several defenders before beating Georgetown goalkeeper Matthew Oster in the 17th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
Patrick Hay’s shot from distance deflected off Oster’s hands into the net in the 38th minute and Armstrong assisted on Brian McNamara’s score less than 90 seconds before intermission for the ginal goal of the match.
Bennet Strutz faced just six shots from the Tigers and did not have a save in posting his ninth win in goal this season.
