CU women drops two matches, men once in tennis

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Cumberland women’s tennis team suffered a pair of defeats in their last two matches, falling 4-3 at Western Kentucky and 7-0 at Belmont Univ. The CU men’s team also dropped a 6-1 decision at Western Kentucky.
 
Cumberland’s women’s team (0-3) lost a close decision at Western Kentucky on February 20, with Bea Mompó-Rebaque, Emily Jacobs and Julia Malyavko winning singles matches for CU.
 
The ‘Toppers won all three doubles outings to start, with Katrina Vucina and Fionna Heuff defeating Mompó-Rebaque and Amber Johnson, 8-4, at No. 1; Carrie True and Leanne Caplinger winning 8-4 over Courtney Schaub and Jacobs at No. 2; and Jessi Brown and Lauren Arnold posting an 8-3 triumph over Malyavko and Helena Dimantas Farias at No. 3.
 
In singles Mompó-Rebaque defeated Vucina, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1, while Jacobs won 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 against Megan Stephens, and Malyavko posted a 7-5, 2-6, 10-6, decision over Caplinger at No. 5.
 
Heuff won 6-1, 6-4, over Schaub at No. 2, True posted a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, triumph against Johnson at No. 3 and Arnold defeated Dimantas Farias, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6.
 
The Bulldog men lost 6-1 on the same day in Bowling Green, with Christhian Hernandez posting CU’s only victory, a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7, triumph at No. 5 singles.
 
WKU won all three doubles outings, including Thomas Krug and Craig Kirchgessner defeating Na’im Azhar and Jeremy Fleming, 8-2, at No. 1; Priyank Gangadharan and Arul Selvan winning 9-7 over Felipe Oliveira and Mike Basler at No. 2; and Andrew Swanson and Quinn Saine posting an 8-5 triumph against Devin Crotzer and Roger Phantanek at No. 3.
 
In singles the ‘Toppers posted victories at the top four spots and No. 6, with Krug winning 6-0, 6-3, over Azhar at No. 1; Currie Martin posting a 6-4, 6-1, victory against Basler at No. 2; Selvan defeating Oliveira, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3; Lance Freeman winning 6-1, 6-3, over Fleming at No. 4; and Kirchgessner posting a 6-3, 6-4, victory against Crotzer at No. 6.
 
The Cumberland women’s team dropped a 7-0 decision at Belmont this past Friday.
 
The Bruins won all three doubles matches, starting with an 8-5 victory at No. 1 by Abby Leatherwood and Laura Stack over Mompó-Rebaque and Johnson. Abigail Hogan and Natalia Nunes defeated Schaub and Jacobs by the same score at No. 2, and Catherine Holliday and Lindsay Bennett won 8-0 over Malyavko and Dimantas Farias at No. 3.
 
In singles Leatherwood posted a 6-4, 6-3, triumph over Mompó-Rebaque at No. 1, while Stack defeated Schaub, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 and Holliday won 6-1, 6-0, against Johnson at No. 3. Bennett defeated Jacobs, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4, Hogan won 6-1, 6-0, over Malyavko at No. 5 and Nunes posted a 6-0, 6-0, triumph against Dimantas Farias at No. 6.
 
Cumberland is scheduled to play at Alabama-Huntsville and Alabama A&M this coming Saturday, both the men’s and women’s teams.
