Tennis drops opener, 6-1

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland lost a hard-fought men’s tennis opener Friday, falling 6-1 to Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Ky., in a match much closer than the score appears.
 
Cumberland (0-1) got victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles after the Colonels did not have a sixth player for the match. But EKU (3-3) won the remaining two doubles matches and five singles outings to post the victory.
 
In doubles Carlos Pons and Carlos Valdenebro defeated Devin Crotzer and Jeremy Fleming, 8-2, at No. 2, and Emilio Piriz and Niklas Schroeder won 8-3 against Na’im Azhar and Mike Basler at No. 1.
 
Pons defeated Fleming, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 before Piriz won 6-2, 6-0, over Felipe Oliveira at No. 4. Valdenebro’s 6-2, 7-5, triumph at No. 2 over Azhar clinched the victory for EKU.
 
Basler put up a good fight at No. 1 singles, falling 6-7, 2-6, to Schroeder, and Philip Janz defeated Cristhian Hernandez at No. 5, 6-0, 6-2.
 
Cumberland plays at Western Kentucky on February 20 before heading south to Alabama for Spring Break starting March 6.
