LEBANON, Tenn. – Newcomer Evan Sanna won three matches before falling in the quarterfinals in singles and Sanna and Devin Crotzer reached the semifinals with three victories for Cumberland’s men’s tennis team this past weekend at the ITA Southeast Regional in Owensboro, Ky.
Sanna posted three straight-set wins in the field of 48 before dropping a 2-6, 6-4, 3-6, decision to Martin Methodist’s second-seeded Vinicius Santos in the quarterfinals. Sanna defeated Bethel University’s Rafael Sousa, 6-0, 6-0; Campbellsville University’s ninth-seeded Carlon Anton, 7-6 (4), 6-3; and Union College’s third-seeded Pierre Vernin, 6-1, 1-0, retired.
Crotzer won his opening match in singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Bethel’s Jared Stroman before falling 1-6, 0-6, to Santos in the Round of 32. Jeremy Fleming and Roger Phantanek both lost opening round matches for the Bulldogs.
In doubles Sanna and Crotzer defeated Georgetown College’s Gustavo Echeverria and Carlos del Valle, 8-4; Union College’s Yvon Haessig and Gilles Cornelis, 8-4; and Brescia University’s Thiago Mastroianni and Alex Bumm, 8-3. The Bulldog duo lost in the semifinals, 8-4, to Campbellsville’s Pablo Numbela and Anton, the tournament’s eventual winner.
Fleming and Phantanek dropped their opening doubles match, 8-1, to Lindsey Wilson’s Andre Santos and Marlon Dalpont.
The men’s tennis team will compete in the Patriot Fall Classic at the Univ. of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky., October 9-10.
