CU posts fourth straight win

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland won all three doubles matches, including one in a tiebreaker, and posted singles victories at Nos. 1, 3 and 5 en route to a 6-3 win over Bethel University in men’s tennis action Tuesday at the Tommy Gray Memorial Tennis Courts on the CU campus.

Cumberland (4-1) won its fourth straight match overall and got off to a great start with a sweep of the doubles tilts.

Pedro Rodigues and Devin Crotzer defeated Paolo Vecchi and Kristian Takac, 8-3, at No. 2, while Jeremy Fleming and Cristhian Hernandez won by the same score at No. 3 over Ryan Weatherly and Raphael Sousa. Evan Sanna and Na’im Azhar outlasted Joao Souza and Eduardo Espinar, 9-8 (3), at No. 1.

In singles the Bulldogs split the six matches, which all ended in straight sets.

Hernandez defeated Sousa, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, while Rodrigues won 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 against Espinar and Sanna clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-1, triumph at No. 1 over Souza. Vecchi posted a 6-4, 6-3, win at No. 2 against Azhar and Weatherly won 6-4, 6-4, over Shawn Schaefer at No. 6. CU’s Crotzer retired at No. 4 with Takac leading, 3-2. For his efforts Sanna was named the Music City Star of the Game.

Cumberland plays its next four matches on the road starting Friday at Tennessee Wesleyan. The Bulldogs will also take on 22nd-ranked Lee University on Saturday.
