Cumberland falls to McKendree, 6-3

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland dropped a pair of doubles matches and four singles outings in straight sets, falling 6-3 to McKendree University in men’s tennis action Thursday at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts on the CU campus.

The Bulldogs (7-5) will next play in the NAIA Qualifying Tournament on April 29-30 at The Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.

McKendree (17-2) won doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 3 to take an early advantage.

Gabor Toth and Luciano Misitrano defeated Na’im Azhar and Pedro Rodrigues, 8-4, at No. 1 and Doug Mennerick and Davi Venditto won 8-6 at No. 3 over Jeremy Fleming and Cristhian Hernandez. CU’s Evan Sanna and Devin Crotzer posted an 8-6 victory at No. 2 against Barnabas Toth and Fabio Tsuchiya.

In singles Azhar’s 6-1, 6-2, victory at No. 2 over Paulo Goncalves evened the match at two, but the Bearkats won the next four singles matches for the team triumph.

Tsuchiya defeated Crotzer, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4, before Gabor Toth won 6-2, 6-3, against Sanna at No. 1. Venditto posted a 6-4, 6-4, victory at No. 6 versus Hernandez and Misitrano won 6-4, 6-3, over Fleming at No. 5. Rodrigues came back from down a set for the Bulldogs other victory, winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, against Barnabas Toth at No. 3. For his efforts Rodrigues was named the Music City Star of the Game.
