LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s tennis teams head to Chattanooga, Tenn., this weekend for the NAIA Qualifying Tournament, with the women facing Tennessee Wesleyan and the men taking on rival Martin Methodist on Friday at The Champions Club.
The Bulldog women have struggled this season, posting a 2-12 record, but the squad has five losses by either 5-4 or 6-3 scores, close matches where one result the other way could have led to victory.
Cumberland and Tennessee Wesleyan face off in the quarterfinals of the 10-team women’s event. The two squads played earlier this year in Athens, Tenn., with CU holding a 4-1 lead before the match was suspended because of rain.
The Bulldog men were ranked most of the season before dropping two of the final four matches of the season. CU heads into the tournament 7-5 overall and receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches’ Top 25.
Cumberland and Martin Methodist meet in the semifinals of the five-team men’s tournament. The clubs split their two matches this season, each winning on the road. The Bulldogs took a 6-3 decision in Pulaski on March 16 and the RedHawks returned the favor with a 5-4 triumph in Lebanon on April 2.
