CU season ends with 5-4 loss

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland won a pair of doubles matches, including one in a tiebreaker, but 15th-ranked Martin Methodist claimed the top four singles outings in straight sets and the RedHawks ended the Bulldogs season with a 5-4 triumph Friday in the NAIA Qualifying Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.
Cumberland (4-11) started the match with victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, as Jeremy Fleming and Christhian Hernandez posted an 8-2 victory at No. 3 over Matthew Dyer and Alvaro Morcillo and Felipe Oliveira and Roger Phantanek outlasted Fabio Santos and Juna Suarez in a breaker, 9-8 (6). At No. 1 MMC’s Melvin Prada and Vinicius Santos won 8-1 over Na’im Azhar and Devin Crotzer.
In singles all six matches were decided in straight sets, with the RedHawks posting victories at the top four spots.
Prada defeated Azhar, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1, while Vinicius Santos won 6-1, 6-3, over Hernandez at No. 2. Renato Castro posted a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Oliveira at No. 3, and Fabio Santos defeated Fleming, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4.
The Bulldogs won the last two matches, with Crotzer winning 7-5, 6-3, over Suarez at No. 5 and Phantanek posted a 6-3, 6-3, triumph at No. 6 against Morcillo.
