Bulldogs drop 5-4 decision to Bethel

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland split the six singles matches but lost 2-of-3 doubles outings and dropped a 5-4 decision to 22nd-ranked Bethel University Friday in men’s tennis action in Dickson, Tenn. The match was suspended because of rain during doubles action on March 3 in Georgetown, Ky. 

 
Cumberland (4-10) will now play in the NAIA Qualifying Tournament this weekend in Montgomery, Ala.
 
Bethel won two of the three doubles matches, with Andres Mejia and Felipe Friedrich defeating CU’s Mike Basler and Felipe Oliveira, 8-2, at No. 1, and Gustavo Hoewell and Luke Newbold posting an 8-5 victory at No. 2 over Na’im Azhar and Devin Crotzer. Bulldogs Jeremy Fleming and Christhian Hernandez won 8-4 at No. 3 over Joao Souza and Bill Robertson.
 
In singles Azhar defeated Mejia, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1, but the Wildcats won the next three spots in the order.
 
Friedrich posted a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Basler at No. 2, Hoewell won 6-0, 6-0, against Hernandez at No. 3 and Newbold defeated Oliveira, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4.
 
Fleming outlasted Souza at No. 5, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9, and Crotzer posted a 6-0, 6-0, victory at No. 6 over Robertson.
