LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Antonio Manuel Marcelo lost in the semifinals in singles and Marcelo and Pedro Rodriguez dropped an 8-3 decision in the doubles final, leading the tennis teams at the ITA Southeast Regional this past weekend in Georgetown, Ky.
The three-day tournament was plagued by rain on Friday and Saturday, forcing matches indoors and deep into the night both days at two clubs in Lexington, Ky., one nearly an hour away from the team's hotel in Georgetown.
Marcelo was the No. 1 seed in the 64-player men’s field and won three times, including a super tiebreaker victory over Lindsey Wilson’s Pablo Vilches in the Round of 32; a 6-2, 6-2, victory against Campbellsville University’s Alberto Diaz in the Round of 16; and a 6-3, 6-1, triumph over the University of Pikeville’s Dmitry Babenkov in the quarterfinals. LWC’s Fabricio Morales posted a 6-2, 6-3, win over the Bulldog sophomore in the semifinals.
Rodriguez, a junior, defeated Pikeville’s Connor Smith, 6-2, 6-1, and Asbury University’s Scott Layton in a super tiebreaker in the Round of 32 before falling to Asbury’s Nathan Schley, 6-4, 1-6, 2-6.
Sophomore Andres Burgos posted a 6-3, 6-2, triumph over Pikeville’s Jose Enruque Marval Lozada before dropping a 1-6, 4-6, decision to Bethel University’s Peter Baca in the Round of 32. Senior Jeremy Fleming won his opening match as well, 6-0, 6-0, against Brescia University’s Moises Goncalves before falling 6-7, 3-6, to Schley. Senior Cristhian Hernandez lost 4-6, 3-6, to Bethel’s Travis Hyman in the first round.
In doubles Marcelo and Rodriguez defeated Danilo Garcia and Mateo Pena from the University of the Cumberlands and Campbellsville’s Pontus Blom and Alberto Diaz by identical 8-3 scores and won 8-6 against Baca and Hyman in the semifinals. The CU duo lost 8-3 in the finals to LWC’s Morales and Giles Cornelius.
Fleming and Hernandez lost their first match 8-5 to Campbellsville’s Sebastian Marot and Austin Spalding.
