Tennis teams remain ranked in NAIA Top 25

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s tennis teams remain ranked in the second regular season edition of the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 released Tuesday, with the men at No. 11 and the women 22nd, as announced by the national office.

The Bulldog men (1-0) upset NCAA Division I Belmont University, 4-3, on February 22 in the team’s only match to this point. Matches in the last two weeks against Bethel University and Martin Methodist have both been canceled because of cold and windy conditions. CU was ranked No. 11 in the Preseason Coaches’ Top 25 and remained 11th in the first regular season poll on Feb. 19 as well as this week.

Cumberland is scheduled to play at North Alabama on Wednesday before beginning play in the AUM Spring Invitational this weekend in Montgomery, Ala.

The CU women lost its only match so far this year, dropping a 6-1 decision versus Belmont on Feb. 15. The Bulldogs also had matches against Bethel and Martin Methodist as well as a conference outing versus Shawnee State canceled because of cold and windy conditions. Cumberland was ranked 22nd in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll before moving up two spots to No. 20 on Feb. 19.

The squad will take part in the AUM Spring Invitational starting Friday. Both the men and women are scheduled to host Bluefield College in a Mid-South Conference match on March 11 and Tennessee Wesleyan in a nonconference outing on March 15 at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts on campus.
