Men's tennis drops 7-2 decision

LEBANON, Tenn. – Top-ranked Auburn Montgomery claimed five singles and a pair of doubles matches in a 7-2 victory over 11th-ranked Cumberland in men’s tennis action Friday afternoon at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts.

Cumberland’s 21st-ranked Antonio Manuel Marcelo and Pedro Rodrigues defeated Tim Hewitt and Josh Reason, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles and Sebastian Nava posted the only singles win with a 6-2, 6-2, victory at No. 5 over 14th-ranked Othmane Lalami, but the Warhawks (11-3) registered four singles wins in straight sets and posted victories in the other two doubles outings.

AUM’s 14th-ranked Zinelabidine Jouini and Lalami posted an 8-1 win at No. 2 over Nava and Pablo Borrero and 23rd-ranked Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff and Miguel Grifol recorded an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 versus Jeremy Fleming and Andres Burgos.

Pinones-Haltenhoff, ranked No. 2 nationally in singles, defeated 19th-ranked Marcelo, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1, while sixth-ranked Hewitt came back to win against Rodrigues at No. 2, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0. Grifol won a pair of tiebreakers versus Borrero at No. 3 and Jouini posted a 6-3, 6-2, victory at No. 5 against Burgos. Reason defeated Fleming, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6.

Cumberland (7-2) plays at 17th-ranked Campbellsville University on Tuesday and will host Western Kentucky at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.
