Both tennis teams drop one spot in NAIA poll

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Cumberland men’s and women’s tennis teams dropped one spot in the latest NAIA Tennis Coaches’ Top 25 poll, the national office announced Tuesday.

The Bulldog men are ranked 10th in this week’s poll and have won four straight matches overall after Tuesday’s 5-0 victory over UVA-Wise in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Championships. CU, 16-3 overall, will take on the winner of the University of Pikeville and Georgetown College on Friday at 1 p.m. Central Time in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

All three of Cumberland’s defeats this season have come against Top 10 competition – top-ranked Auburn Montgomery, No. 4 Lindsey Wilson and 10th-ranked Xavier [LA] University.

The Bulldog women dropped one spot to 17th in the poll despite five consecutive victories after Tuesday’s 9-0 triumph against Shawnee State, also in the quarterfinals of the MSC Tournament. CU (13-5) will face 20th-ranked Campbellsville University in the tourney semifinals on Friday at 10 a.m. Central Time at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington, Ky.

Four of the team’s five losses this season have come against Top 10 ranked teams, including second-ranked Auburn Montgomery twice, No. 5 Lindsey Wilson and 10th-ranked Xavier [LA] University.
