LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s men moved up one spot to ninth and the CU women dropped a spot to No. 18 in the latest NAIA Tennis Coaches’ Top 25 polls releases Tuesday by the national office.
The Bulldog men tied their highest ranking of the year at No. 9 after posting a 2-1 mark in the Mid-South Conference Championships. CU defeated UVA-Wise and No. 20 University of Pikeville before dropping a 5-3 decision to then No. 9 Lindsey Wilson in the tournament title match.
Cumberland has a pair of losses this season to Lindsey Wilson and the club’s other two defeats were against Auburn Montgomery and Xavier [LA] University, both teams currently ranked in the Top 5 nationally. The Bulldogs also defeated current No. 7 Bethel University, BU’s only loss this year.
The CU women were also 2-1 in the MSC Championships, winning against Shawnee State and 20th-ranked Campbellsville University before losing to sixth-ranked Lindsey Wilson in the title match.
The Bulldogs have five losses this year versus Lindsey Wilson, Auburn Montgomery and Xavier [LA] University, all teams currently ranked in the Top 6 in the country, as well as a defeat to NCAA Division I Belmont University.
Both Cumberland teams will find out May 8 if and who they will play in the NAIA Championships set for May 14-18 in Mobile, Ala.
