Lopes claims singles title at Grizzly Open
Freshman Thiago Lopes posted six singles victories to claim the title at the Grizzly Open.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Thiago Lopes won six singles matches in the three-day event hosted by Georgia Gwinnett over the weekend to claim the title in the B Draw at the Grizzly Open in Lawrenceville, Ga.

The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native started with a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Middle Georgia State’s Elliot Wharton and posted a 7-5, 6-4, win versus Emmanuel College’s Lukas Konigs. He defeated Florida Southern’s Oscar Soderlund, 6-0, 6-2, and teammate Axel Lucich, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Lopes outlasted USC-Aiken’s Clement Raymnond, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals and registered a 6-3, 7-6 (4), victory in the finals over Middle Georgia’s Colby Gandy.

Elsewhere in the B Draw, Jakov Tshirkin collected a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7, victory against Middle Georgia’s Ali Bougzoul in the Round of 64 before losing to Raymond, 6-4, 6-4.

Lucich claimed a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8, win versus USC-Aiken’s Alejandro Andino, defeated Middle Georgia’s Jake M.Hicks, 6-3, 6-2, and outlasted Georgia State’s Christian Gochnauer, 7-5, 3-6, 10-2, in the Round of 16 before falling to Lopes.

Alejandro Rosas Garcia recorded a 6-2, 6-0, victory against Point University’s Steven P. Tracy and a 6-4, 6-3, win over Emory University’s Zachary H. Surmacz before falling 7-6 (4), 6-3, to Alabama State’s Szabin Pasztay in the Round of 16.

Dylan Nelson lost his opening-round match to Florida Southern’s Arthur Viallaneix, 6-0, 6-1, and lost in the backdraw, 8-1, to Reinhardt University’s Nikita Hrynov.

Anatoily Lashkul posted a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6, victory over Florida Southern’s Miguel Alvarez-Hevia in the Round of 32 before dropping a 7-5, 6-4, decision to Lander University’s Loic Minery in the Round of 16 in the A Draw.

In doubles Lashkul and Lopes posted a 9-7 win against Emory’s Alex B. Josepher and Aman Manji and an 8-4 victory over Alabama State’s Pasztay and Ronald Mataba before dropping an 8-5 decision to Middle Georgia’s Filip Seatovic and Nishanth A. Rebello in the Round of 16.

Lucich and Tshirkin lost in their opening match, 8-2, to Point University’s Daniel Blanchard and Zachary M. Sheeler, while Nelson and Rosas Garcia also dropped their first match by the same score to Emory’s Joshua Goodman and Jonathan Jemison.
