CU posts 6-3 win over William Woods

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland posted a pair of doubles wins and Jose Ortega Vela’s victory at No. 5 singles clinched a 6-3 dual match win for the 22nd-ranked Phoenix over William Woods University in men’s tennis action Monday at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts.

Cumberland (6-6) continues its homestand Wednesday, facing second-ranked Auburn Montgomery at 12:30 p.m.

CU’s Thiago Lopes and Axel Lucich registered an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Christian Barbieri and Jelmer Van Vliet and Anatoliy Lashkul and Jakov Tshirkin collected an 8-2 victory versus Marcos Constantino and David Barbieri. WWU’s Stefan Simic and Johnnie Carmichael recorded an 8-1 triumph at No. 3 against Vela and Dylan Nelson.

In singles Lashkul defeated Constantino, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 and Lopes won 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2, but the Owls (4-3) pulled within 4-3 with singles victories at Nos. 3 and 4. Christian Barbieri posted a 6-4, 6-3, win against Lucich at No. 3 and Simic tallied a 6-2, 7-5, triumph at No. 4 over Tshirkin.

Vela’s 7-5, 6-0, win at No. 5 versus Van Vliet finished off the team victory for Cumberland and Nelson claimed a win at No. 6 when Carmichael retired in the second set.
