Men's tennis claims road wins at Georgetown, Shawnee State

LEBANON, Tenn. – Fourteenth-ranked Cumberland men’s tennis completed a three-match road swing with a pair of wins over the weekend, defeating Georgetown College, 7-2, and Shawnee State, 9-0, on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s match against Georgetown was moved indoors because of inclement weather. The Phoenix (9-5) swept the three doubles outings, with Ramon Puertolas and Axel Lucich defeated Kaushik Kailish and Josh Piunti, 8-3, at No. 3.

Thiago Lopes and Francisco Fernandez Meaca won by the same score at No. 2 versus Cole Wilson and Hunter Nosek and Pau Grabuleda Cruañas and Alejo Bagnera collected a 9-7 victory at No. 1 over Ryo Takeda and Phillipp Hoeper.

Fernandez Meaca was the first off in singles with a 6-2, 6-1, win at No. 3 against Hoeper before Takeda defeated 30th-ranked Grabuleda Cruañas, 7-6 (4), 6-3, at No. 1. Bagnera clinched the match for CU with a 7-6 (6), 6-1, triumph at No. 5 over Cole McCreary.

Guillermo Pardos won 4-6, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 against Nosek and Puertolas collected a 7-6 (7), 7-5, decision at No. 2 versus Wilson. Georgetown’s other point was a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, victory at No. 4 by Piunti against Lucich.

Cumberland lost just two total games in the victory against Shawnee State, with that match indoors in Cincinnati on Sunday.

Grabuleda Cruañas and Bagnera defeated Jacob Freeland and Austin Hanshaw, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles and Lopes and Fernandez Meaca claimed an 8-0 win at No. 2 versus Zack Fox and Carter Nolte. Pardos and Aleksandar Milosevic won by the same score at No. 3 against Zach Colley and Niko Richards.

In singles Grabuleda Cruañas posted a 6-0, 6-0, victory at No. 1 versus Freeland while Fernandez Meaca won by the same score at No. 2 over Hanshaw and Bagnera blanked Fox at No. 3.

Pardos defeated Nolte, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 before Lopes collected a 6-0, 6-1, win at No. 4 against Colley and Milosevic ended the match with a 6-0, 6-0, victory at No. 6 versus Richards.

Cumberland hosts 11th-ranked Campbellsville University on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts, the first of three home matches this week.
