LEBANON, Tenn. – Chrissy Worth tossed a five-hit shutout and Brooke Kelley drove in three runs in 10th-ranked Martin Methodist’s 5-0 victory over Cumberland in the TranSouth Softball Championships in Pulaski, Tenn. The loss eliminated the Bulldogs from the tournament and ended their season.
Cumberland (7-32) stranded runners in four of the seven innings against the Redhawks (40-10), but was unable to drive home any of the potential opportunities.
Karla Pladna singled and was left at second in the second inning, while Stephanie Gutierrez and Paige Terrell both singled in the third but Jackie West grounded out to end the inning.
Emily Smith doubled to leadoff the fifth but was left at second base, and Terrell singled to leadoff the sixth and moved all the way to third on the play, but was stranded just 60 feet from home.
Katie Goad (3-10) went the distance for the Bulldogs, giving up just six hits but four walks with two strikeouts.
Worth (12-2) walked one and struck out five for MMC in the victory.
The Redhawks scored twice in the first, starting with a leadoff walk to Alicia Boris and a sacrifice by Nicole Velez. Maria Robinson drew a walk and stole second before Kelley’s two-run single through the hole on the leftside.
In the third Boris singled through the same spot to leadoff and Velez reached on a bunt hit. Worth and Robinson both struck out, but Kelley walked to load the bases and Samantha Queen singled home pinch-runner Kristen King and Velez for a 4-0 MMC advantage.
The home team added another run in the fifth after Velez drew a leadoff walk, but Worth bounced into a doubleplay. Robinson followed with a double to leftcnter and Kelley singled through the leftside for her third RBI of the contest.
