West, Smith record two RBIs each in 5-4 victory

LEBANON, Tenn. – Jackie West and Emily Smith both drove in a pair of runs and Alli Donnelly got out of a seventh-inning jam to post the victory in Cumberland’s 5-4 triumph over Trevecca in the loser’s bracket of the TranSouth Championships Thursday morning in Pulaski, Tenn.
With the victory Cumberland (7-31) moves into a 5 p.m. matchup against the loser of Martin Methodist and Bethel College, who play at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs dropped a 2-0 decision to MMC in Wednesday’s opening round.
CU trailed 2-0 before scoring five runs in the fourth inning. Trevecca plated a run in the sixth and one more in the seventh and had runners on second and third with one out before lining into a game-ending doubleplay.
Donnelly (2-14) posted her first victory since April 11 at Mid-Continent. The senior allowed nine hits and three earned runs with three walks and one strikeout. Stephanie Gutierrez and Cassie McKinney both collected two hits for the Bulldogs and McKinney drove in a run as well.
Riley Mashburn (7-8) took the loss for TNU, giving up five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Stephanie Fisher tossed the final 3.1 innings for the Trojans, allowing two hits and striking out five.
TNU plated two runs in the first after a leadoff triple from Chelsea Bailey. Megan Suggs then walked before an RBI groundout from Karli Rush. Sammy Simmons singled to center, putting runners on the corners, and Mashburn’s double to center scored Suggs.
The Bulldogs stranded a pair in the third after a Gutierrez two-out single and Paige Terrell reached on an error by Suggs at second base. But West struck out looking to end the threat.
CU broke through in the fourth with five hits, starting with a single to center from Donnelly. Karla Pladna was hit and Tonya Barlow singled to right, loading the bases.
Smith singled home two runs and moved to second on the throw to the plate. McKinney’s single to right scored Barlow and Gutierrez followed with a walk. West plated the final two runs with a two-out single to center for a 5-2 Bulldogs advantage.
Suggs singled to leadoff the TNU fifth and Simon was hit with one out, but Mashburn lined out to right and Melinda Patterson grounded out to end the inning.
CU missed a chance to add to the lead in the sixth after McKinney singled with one out and Terrell reached on another error, this one by the pitcher, Fisher. But West flied out to left to end the threat.
The Trojans scored once in the bottom of the inning, starting with Caitlyn Bailey reaching on a dropped fly ball by Terrell in centerfield and moved all the way to third on the play. Megan Hemmingsen then singled up the middle, but Donnelly got out of the inning without any further damage.
In the seventh Pladna singled to leftcenter and Barlow reached on an error by Hemmingsen at short, but Lauren Carr struck out and Smith flied out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the frame Rush drew a 10-pitch walk to leadoff, fouling off five pitches in the process. Mashburn singled to rightcenter before an RBI single to center by Patterson. Caitlyn Bailey then lined to center, where Terrell made the catch and doubled off Patterson at first to end the game.
