Bulldogs falls to MMC, 2-0
LEBANON, Tenn. – Samantha Queen hit a two-run homer in the second and Sally Gale tossed a four-hit shutout, as 10th-ranked Martin Methodist defeated Cumberland, 2-0, in the opening round of the TranSouth Championships Wednesday in Pulaski, Tenn.
With the loss the Bulldogs play in an elimination game Thursday at 9 a.m. against Mid-Continent, a 1-0 loser to 22nd-ranked Freed-Hardeman earlier Wednesday.
Cumberland (6-31) stranded four runners in the contest, including a pair in the third after one-out singles from Karla Pladna and Alli Donnelly. Tonya Barlow struck out and Lauren Carr grounded out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs also left one runner on base in the first and second innings. Paige Terrell singled with one out in the first and Carr singled with two outs in the second.
Donnelly reached for CU in the seventh on an error but was doubled off on a popup by Carr.
Donnelly (1-14) suffered the loss on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits with four walks. She worked out of jams in the third and sixth innings, stranding a pair of Redhawks runners in both frames.
Gale (18-4) struck out six and gave up just four hits in the victory for MMC (39-9).
