CU drops two at Union
LEBANON, Tenn. – Union University scored four unearned runs in the opener and then pounded out 14 hits in the second game, sweeping Cumberland in softball action, 4-0 and 9-1, Saturday at Fesmire Field in Jackson, Tenn.
Cumberland (6-30, 1-13 TSAC) ends the regular season tied for seventh in the TranSouth heading into next week’s TSAC Championships in Pulaski, Tenn.
The Bulldogs managed eight hits in the doubleheader and stranded nine runners, but four costly errors in the twinbill made the difference, especially in the opener.
Alli Donnelly (1-13) took the loss in the opener despite not allowing an earned run. She gave up five hits, walked three and struck out two. Union scored two unearned runs in the first and two more in the fourth.
Union starter Hailee Edwards (12-5) gave up three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in a complete-game shutout.
In the second game Katie Goad (3-9) was touched for nine runs on 14 hits in five-plus innings with six walks and two strikeouts. Union’s Sydney McMillin gave up one run on five hits with two strikeouts.
Union (24-21, 9-5) scored twice in the first and twice more in the fourth for the only runs of the first game.
In the first Lindsey Landreneau singled with one out and Ashley Blankenship drew a two-out walk. Katie Davis bounced to short, but Cassie McKinney’s throw to third was wild. Landreneau scored on the play and Blankenship moved to third. Kristen Kirk then bounced to second and Blankenship came across on an error by Jackie West.
In the fourth McMillin walked and pinch-runner Brooke Laws stole second. Bethany Burnett reached on another McKinney error, setting up Landreneau, who doubled to left with two outs, playing both runners for a 4-0 Union lead.
The Bulldogs threatened very little in the contest. West drew a two-out walk in the first but was stranded. Paige Terrell singled to leadoff the fourth and West sacrificed her to second, but Donnelly struck out and Pladna popped out to end the inning.
Tonya Barlow singled in the fifth but Emily Smith grounded into a 5-4-3 doubleplay, while Pladna singled in the seventh but was left on base.
In the second game Union scored three times in the third to take an early lead.
Michelle Albonetti singled with one out and stole second. With two outs Ali Thomas singled to center, plating Albonetti, and Thomas moved to second on the throw. Katie Davis then singled to right and went to second on the throw home, as Thomas scored.
Blankenship followed with a single to shallow center, plating Davis for a 3-0 Union lead.
The home team scored three more times in the fourth, starting with a pinch-hit double down the leftfield line from Candice Thompson. She scored on a two-out single to rightcenter from Landreneau, who stole second.
Thomas’s single to right scored Landreneau and Thomas ended up on third after a bad throw from leftfielder West. Davis then singled home Thomas for a 6-0 Union advantage.
In the Union fifth McMillin walked but was forced at second on a bunt by Bethany Burnett. She stole second and moved to third on a single through the leftside by Carmesha Owens. Brooke Laws walked, loading the bases, before a sacrifice fly from Landreneau.
The Bulldogs finally got on the board in the sixth. Terrell singled with one out and West was hit. Donnelly then hit a ball to rightfield and was thrown out at first, but the runners moved to second and third. Pladna’s single to left plated Terrell, but Lauren Carr flied out to end the inning without any further runs for CU.
Union ended the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, starting with a double down the rightfield line from Davis. Blankenship singled to center and Kristen Kirk walked, loading the bases. McMillin then walked, forcing in a run, before a single down the rightfield line from Ali Bozza ended the game.
