LEBANON, Tenn. – Trevecca scored twice in the ninth inning to win the opener and plated two runs in four different innings to earn the victory in game two, as the Trojans swept a doubleheader, 4-2 and 8-3, against Cumberland Friday in softball action at the CU Softball Field.

Cumberland (6-22, 1-9 TSAC) stranded 25 runners in the doubleheader – 12 in the opener and 13 in the second game. The Bulldogs were just 4-for-25 with runners in scoring position in the twinbill, but one play may have summed up the team’s struggles to find holes.

Tiffany Barlow’s shot to leftcenter in the fourth inning of game two that hit the top of the fence and bounced back into play. Had the ball cleared the wall for a three-run homer, CU would have trailed only 4-3. Instead only two runs scored in the inning and Trevecca added a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth to put the game out of reach.

Stephanie Gutierrez went 6-for-7 in the twinbill for Cumberland but also made two costly errors on consecutive plays in the first inning of the second game that scored two runs and gave Trevecca an early lead. Cassie McKinney collected three hits in the two games and eight hits over the last two days, raising her season average more 80 points.

Alli Donnelly (1-10) suffered the loss in the first game for CU, allowing three earned runs on 12 hits in nine innings. She walked two and struck out one. Katie Goad (3-5) took the loss in the second game, giving up six runs, two earned, on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

Trevecca scored twice in the ninth inning to win the opener, 4-2. Chelsea Bailey scored on a single by Megan Suggs and Karli Rush’s two-out double plated Suggs with the winning runs for the Trojans (18-12, 7-1).

Riley Mashburn (6-5) picked up the victory with four innings of shutout relief, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Mashburn also came into the second game with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning, just after Barlow’s shot off the wall. She retired the next two batters and sister Shelby Mashburn tossed the final two innings.

Trevecca scored two runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings in the second contest to take an 8-3 victory. Suggs scored three times and Riley Mashburn added a pair of doubles for TNU.

Lauren Baker (5-2) earned the win in the second game, giving up one earned run on seven hits in 4.1 innings while striking out three.

Trevecca got on the board in the third after Chelsea Bailey reached on an error to start the inning. Suggs sacrificed her to second and Bailey moved to third on a passed ball. She scored on a sacrifice fly from Sammy Simon.

The Trojans added another run in the fourth after a leadoff double from Caitlyn Bailey and a single by Riley Mashburn. Bailey scored on Patterson’s single to center.

CU cut into the deficit in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff walk by Donnelly. Sandra Vasquez was hit with two outs and McKinney followed with a single through the leftside. Gutierrez then walked, forcing in a run, but Paige Terrell grounded out to end the inning with the Bulldogs still trailing.

Donnelly walked again, this time with two outs, in the fifth, and Emily Smith followed with a double to rightcenter. Lauren Carr then singled through the leftside, tying the game at two.

The Bulldogs had a chance to take the lead in the sixth, loading the bases with one out after singles from Gutierrez and Terrell and a walk to Jackie West, but Karla Pladna struck out and Donnelly grounded out to end the inning.

Cumberland did not threaten in the seventh, eighth or ninth innings, going in order in all three frames. The Bulldogs stranded runners in the first six innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and sixth innings and two runners in the second and fifth.

Trevecca scored two unearned runs in the first inning of the second game, thanks to a pair of errors by Gutierrez. Chelsea Bailey led off the contest with a single to left. Suggs followed with sacrifice and reached when Gutierrez booted the slow roller. Simon then bunted and the CU third baseman’s throw sailed wide of first and all the way down the rightfield line, allowing both runners to score.

TNU plated two more runs in the fourth after Caitlyn Bailey reached on an error by Donnelly at first to start the frame. Riley Mashburn then doubled to leftcenter, scoring Bailey, and Megan Hemmingsen plated a run with a single to left.

The Bulldogs plated two runs in the bottom of the inning. Pladna reached on an error by TNU shortstop Cassidy Critchfield. Smith singled with one out and Barlow hit a blast that hit the top of the wall in leftcenter and bounced back into the field of play. Pladna scored but Barlow ended up with just a single.

Carr followed with a single to left, scoring Smith and cutting the Trojans lead to 4-2.

The visitors added two more runs in the fifth after Suggs reached on an error by Barlow to start the frame. Rush tripled down the rightfield line and scored on a double by Mashburn.

TNU scored twice more in the sixth. Critchfield singled with one out and scored on a two-out double to rightcenter from Suggs. Simon followed with an RBI double for an 8-2 Trojans lead.

Cumberland scored once in the bottom of the inning after McKinney reached on an error to start the frame. Gutierrez followed with a single, her sixth hit of the doubleheader, and McKinney scored on a sacrifice fly to rightcenter from West.

Cumberland finishes the regular season next week with four doubleheaders, all on consecutive days, starting Wednesday at Martin Methodist. The Bulldogs also play at Lambuth, Bethel College and Union University.
