CU splits with Lindsey Wilson

LEBANON, Tenn. – Paige Terrell’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh plated Tonya Barlow with the winning run, giving Cumberland a doubleheader split Thursday against Lindsey Wilson in softball action at the CU Softball Field. The Bulldogs lost the first game, 7-1, and won the second contest, 7-6.
 
Cumberland (6-20) played from behind the entire second game before finally winning the contest in the seventh. Lindsey Wilson (22-17) led 3-0, 3-2, 5-2 and 6-5 before CU tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single from Stephanie Gutierrez.
 
In the seventh Barlow led off with a single. Cassie McKinney, who recorded five hits in the twinbill, grounded to second, but Brittany Dorsey’s throw was wide of second, pulling Jamie Williams off the bag. Gutierrez then sacrificed, but catcher Whitney Mink threw to third, where Williams made the catch but was not on the bag, loading the bases for Terrell.
 
The senior lined out to rightfield, allowing Barlow to score even after a false start on the catch.
 
Jackie West had three of Cumberland’s 15 hits in the contest, while Barlow was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and McKinney collected three hits and scored a run. Karla Pladna netted a pair of hits in each game.
 
Gutierrez (2-7) picked up the victory, scattering 12 hits and giving up four earned runs. She walked four and struck out one for her first victory on the mound since the season opener against Indiana Wesleyan on February 20.
 
Even in victory the Bulldogs stranded 12 runners after leaving 11 in the first game loss.
 
In the opener Lindsey Wilson scored twice in the first and three times in the fourth, pounding out 15 hits in a 7-1 victory.
 
Alli Donnelly (1-9) suffered the loss for CU, allowing six earned runs on 15 hits, walking two and striking out one.
 
LWC’s Olivia Holland (9-11) picked up the victory in game one, giving up one run on seven hits with six walks and one strikeout. Holland came on in relief in the fifth in the second contest and took the loss, allowing an unearned run on three hits in 1.2 innings.
 
Deanndria Moore went 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the opener, while Mink hit a two-run homer and also doubled for the Blue Raiders.
 
The Blue Raiders scored twice in the first inning of the opener after Dorsey led off with a walk and Moore followed with a single. Mink was hit, loading the bases with one out, before an RBI single to left by Haley Cheufront. Lindsey Bridges drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to right.
 
In the second LWC plated another run after Emily Huckaby reached on a throwing error to leadoff. Moore reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second when Emily Smith’s pickoff throw was dropped by Pladna at first. Moore scored on a single to right from Williams for a 3-0 Blue Raider lead.
 
Cheufront led off the third with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Bridges and scored on a two-out single from Huckaby.
 
CU loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning after singles from Gutierrez and Pladna and a walk to Donnelly, but Smith lined out sharply to third to end the inning.
 
In the fourth Moore led off with a single and moved all the way to third on a bunt single from Williams. Moore scored when Williams faked a steal to second and Smith threw down. Mink then hit a two-run homer to center, her seventh of the season, giving the Blue Raiders a 7-0 advantage.
 
Cumberland got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame after a leadoff single from Lauren Carr, a walk to Barlow and a single from McKinney. Terrell bounced into a fielder’s choice, forcing Carr at the plate, but Gutierrez’s sacrifice fly to right plated Barlow.
 
The Blue Raiders scored twice in the first in game two. Dorsey led off with a single and Moore walked before a one-out single from Mink loaded the bases. A two-out bloop single to center from Bridges plated both runners for an early 2-0 LWC lead.
 
The visitors added another run in the second after a one-double from Dorsey. She moved to third on ground ball by Moore and scored on a groundout from Williams.
 
Cumberland scored twice in the second on three hits, starting with a one-out single from Donnelly and a two-out double to leftcenter from Barlow. McKinney’s single to leftcenter scored both runners, cutting the LWC advantage to 3-2.
 
But the Blue Raiders came back with two runs on in the third. Cheufront singled with one out before Bridges hit a two-run homer for a 5-2 lead.
 
Williams led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a throwing error by McKinney, giving the Blue Raiders a 6-2 advantage.
 
CU cut into the deficit again with three runs in the fourth. McKinney collected her fourth hit of the day with a one-out single and Gutierrez followed with a walk. Terrell’s single loaded the bases before an RBI single from West. Pladna added an RBI single and a groundout by Smith plated another run, making it a one-run game.
 
Cumberland concludes the home schedule Friday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Trevecca. Senior Day activities will take place between games of the twinbill.
