Bulldogs split two at MCU

LEBANON, Tenn. – Jackie West collected four hits and scored three times and Alli Donnelly posted a pitching victory in Cumberland’s doubleheader split Saturday against Mid-Continent in Mayfield, Ky.
 
The Bulldogs (5-19, 1-7 TSAC) won the first game, 6-3, and dropped the second contest, 4-2. West went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in the opener and added another hit and run in the second contest.
 
Donnelly picked up the victory in the first game, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Karla Pladna walked twice and scored twice for the Bulldogs and Cassie McKinney added two hits and a run scored. CU scored four times in the sixth inning to break a tie game for the victory.
 
Victoria Spindor took the loss for MCU, giving up four runs on eight hits in four innings of relief.
 
Mid-Continent (11-29, 1-9) plated a pair of runs in the sixth in the second contest to break a tie game and take a 4-2 win.
 
CU’s Katie Goad suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. MCU’s Amanda Duke posted the win, giving up two runs on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
 
The Bulldogs scored in the second inning of the opener after a leadoff walk to Pladna. Lauren Carr’s sacrifice moved the runner to second and Donnelly reached on an error by shortstop Lisa Szatkowski, allowing Pladna to score on the play.
 
In the third West doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. Pladna walked again and Donnelly also walked with two outs, loading the bases. West scored on a ground ball from Emily Smith, giving CU a 2-0 advantage.
 
Spindor cut the lead in half with a leadoff homer for the Cougars in the fourth. MCU tied the game with a leadoff home run from Hayli Burgess in the fifth.
 
CU broke the game open with four runs in the sixth. The inning started with a one-out single to rightcenter from McKinney and a two-out walk to Stephanie Gutierrez. West then singled to rightcenter, plating McKinney, and Pladna’s single to right scored Gutierrez.
 
Carr singled to shallow right, loading the bases, and Donnelly followed with an RBI single. Pladna scored on the play on a wild throw by April Carter, giving the Bulldogs a 6-2 advantage.
 
In the bottom of the inning Spindor drew a leadoff walk and Duke followed with a double to deep center. Szatkowski grounded out and Tiffany Hopwood struck out, but Burgess singled home a run before Nicki Dewitt grounded out to end the inning.
 
In the second game Gutierrez walked with one out in the first and West followed with a double. Both runners scored on wild pitches by Duke for a 2-0 CU edge after a half inning.
 
In the MCU second Burgess singled to leadoff and Szatkowski reached on a bunt. Coronado’s groundout put runners at second and third and Hopwood’s shallow single to left plated Burgess, cutting the Bulldog lead in half. Goad worked out of the inning without any further damage.
 
The Cougars tied the contest in the fifth. Carter drew a leadoff walk and Amber Rapert sacrificed her to second. Carter moved to third on a wild pitch before Spindor was hit. Goad bobbled a ground ball from Burgess, allowing the runner to tie score and tie the contest at two.
 
MCU took the lead in the sixth after Coronado led off with a single. Hopwood and Dewitt both popped up bunts, but Hannah Moseley delivered a two-run homer, her first of the season, for the deciding runs.
 
Cumberland hosts Trevecca Monday in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Senior Day activities will take place between games of the twinbill.
