CU drops two at FHU
LEBANON, Tenn. – Stephanie Gutierrez allowed two runs on four hits in six innings but Cumberland managed just six hits against Freed-Hardeman, falling 11-1 and 2-0 in a doubleheader Thursday in Henderson, Tenn.
The Bulldogs (2-4) scored an unearned run in the first game and trailed 2-1 before allowing nine runs over the final two innings in a game called after six innings because of the eight-run rule. In the second game the Lions (3-3) scored a pair of runs in the third inning in a 2-0 victory.
Gutierrez (1-2) allowed the two runs in the second game, walking three with zero strikeouts. Katie Goad (1-1) took the loss in the first game, giving up seven runs on nine hits in five innings. She walked three and struck out five.
Cumberland stranded six total runners in the twinbill, two in the opener and four in the second contest. Karla Pladna and Lauren Carr both collected singles in the first game, while Paige Terrell, Gutierrez, Tonya Barlow and Emily Smith all singled in the second game.
In the first game the Bulldogs took an early lead, scoring a run in the second inning. Pladna singled with one out and Carr drew a two-out walk. Barlow’s grounder was misplayed by shortstop Jill Brock, allowing Pladna to score on the play for a 1-0 CU advantage.
FHU scored twice in the fourth, with Britney Caldwell and Brittany Yates leading off the inning with consecutive doubles. Brock’s sacrifice bunt moved Yates to third before an RBI single from Tarrah Tucker gave the Lions a 2-1 edge.
The home team plated five more runs in the fifth on five hits and one Bulldog error. Leadoff hitter Carmen Gulley reached on Goad’s throwing error to start the inning and Brittany Steverson followed with a single. Brittany Bradford’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third before Caldwell hit a three-run homer to left.
After an 11-pitch at-bat, Yates followed with a double and Brock singled, putting runners on the corners. A double to leftcenter from Traci Gibbons scored both runners for a 7-1 FHU advantage.
In the sixth Gulley was hit to leadoff and Steverson reached on an infield single. Bradford followed with an RBI double before Caldwell hit a three-run home run to centerfield, ending the contest.
In the second game Gulley walked with one out in the third and stole second. Steverson then singled through the leftside, putting runners on the corners, before Bradford recorded a two-run double down the leftfield line for the only scoring in the contest.
Caldwell then singled and Yates walked to load the bases. Brock bounced to short and Cassie McKinney threw home for the force. Tucker also grounded to short, with McKinney getting the force at third to end the inning.
Cumberland begins a three-game homestand next week, hosting Bethel College in a doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m. at the CU Softball Field. The Bulldogs also play Christian Brothers on March 8 and Tennessee Wesleyan on March 10, both at 1 p.m.
