LEBANON, Tenn. – Stephanie Gutierrez struck out seven and allowed just one run in a complete-game victory and the sophomore also helped herself with an RBI single to score the game-winning run, as Cumberland split a doubleheader with Indiana Wesleyan, winning 3-1 in the first game and falling 10-1 in the second contest Friday at the CU Softball Field. It was the season-opener for both teams.

Gutierrez allowed just five hits, striking out seven and giving up just the one run in the first inning. The righthander walked one and worked out of jams in the third and fifth innings when the Bulldogs committed errors.

Leadoff hitter Paige Terrell collected two hits in the opener and scored on a two-out single to right by Gutierrez in the fifth to give Cumberland a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double from Sandra Vasquez for head coach Heather Stanfill’s first career victory.

In the second game the Wildcats pounded out 12 hits and scored 10 runs, nine earned, in a 10-1 triumph. Molly Yothment and Abbie Forman both went 4-for-4 and Forman drove in seven runs, including a grand slam in the fifth inning.

Cumberland managed only two hits against IWU’s Nicole Clark, who walked two and struck out one in six innings of work.

In the first game, the Wildcats scored in the top of the first after Morgan Wheeler led off the contest with a single to left. She scored on a two-out double to left from Laura Stonitsch.

Wheeler walked with one out in the third and Tamara Davis reached on a two-out error, but Gutierrez struck out Stonitsch to end the threat.

Terrell doubled with two outs in the third for CU, but Cassie McKinney popped out to end the inning. The Bulldogs tied the contest in the fourth with back-to-back doubles from Lauren Carr and Jackie West.

In the CU fifth, Terrell singled with two outs and McKinney walked before Gutierrez slashed a single through the rightside, plating Terrell with the go-ahead run. Tonya Barlow singled with two outs in the sixth and Vasquez followed with a double to rightfield, scoring Barlow for an insurance run for the Bulldogs.

In the second game IWU scored an unearned run in the second inning. Yothmen and Forman both singled and Katie Brummett reached on an error. Maggie Hein then walked, forcing in a run, but CU hurler Alli Donnelly got a groundout and a flyout to end the threat without any further damage.

The Bulldogs tied the contest in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff double from Donnelly. Emily Smith doubled to rightcenter with one out, tying the contest at one.

Indiana Wesleyan scored three times in the third to retake the lead, starting with a one-out double from Davis. Kelsey Decker followed with a single to left and then stole second. Yothment plated one run with a double off the base of the leftfield wall and Forman’s double to left scored two more runs for a 4-1 Wildcats advantage.

IWU added to its lead in the fifth after leadoff walks to Davis and Decker. Yothment then singled before Forman lifted a high fly ball that just cleared the fence in rightcenter for a grand slam and an 8-1 Indiana Wesleyan lead.

The Wildcats added two more runs in the sixth, one on a squeeze bunt by Decker and the other on a two-out double to leftcenter from Forman for her seventh RBI of the contest.
