LEBANON, Tenn. – Megan Lavery hit a two-run homer, Stephanie Gutierrez drove in three runs and Allison Blackwood allowed just one run on four hits in six innings in Cumberland’s 8-1 softball victory over Indiana Wesleyan Saturday. The Bulldogs lost the second game, 1-0, giving up an unearned run in the seventh inning to the Wildcats.

Cumberland (3-1) tallied 12 hits in the opener, scoring three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to break open a close game. Gutierrez singled home a pair of runs and Blackwood doubled home a run in the fourth before Lavery’s two-run homer and an RBI single from Gutierrez in the fifth.

Blackwood (2-0) allowed just four baserunners in the contest, striking out one and not walking a batter for her second victory in two days. IWC starter Abbie Foreman gave up five runs on six hits in four innings, striking out eight, to take the loss.

In the second game, hurlers Gray and Katie Hall hooked up in a pitcher’s duel, with just nine hits combined by the two teams. Hall allowed five hits, struck out six and walked one, while Gray (1-1) gave up four hits, walked one and struck out two. Cumberland stranded eight in the loss, failing to capitalize on a pair of Indiana Wesleyan errors.

The Wildcats finally broke through in the seventh when Kelsey Decker singled to leadoff, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a two-out single to left from pinch-hitter Katie Brummett.

The Bulldogs had a chance to break the scoreless game in the fifth after Lavery reached with two outs on an error by Hall. Victoria Bennett followed with a single to left, but Gutierrez popped out to end the threat.

In the opener Caitlyn Gray singled home a run in the first inning and Meghan White was hit with the bases loaded later in the frame, giving the Bulldogs an early 2-0 advantage.

IWC plated a run in the third after Forman singled to center to leadoff and Erin Abrams reached on a fielder’s choice. Katie Berkemeier’s double down the leftfield line plated Forman, but Blackwood worked out of the jam without any further damage, even after an error later in the inning.

Cumberland plays at the University of the South Wednesday and Lindsey Wilson next Saturday.
