MCKENZIE, Tenn. – Meghan White hit her first career home run in a loss before Cumberland University used a seven-run inning to bounce back for a win in the second game of a doubleheader against Bethel University Sunday at Wildcat Field. The Bulldogs dropped the first game, 5-4, before taking a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.

Cumberland (26-22, 15-13 TranSouth Conference) sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning of the second game, scoring seven runs, including six unearned, with two outs.

Allison Blackwood and Megan Lavery both singled before Sarah Murray reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Heather James plated the first run with a sacrifice fly and White, Gray and Gilliam all followed with singles. White’s hit drove in two more runs, while Gray’s single scored another.

Victoria Bennett then drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Blackwood, who sent a two-run single through the right side of the infield. Stephanie Gutierrez brought home the final run of the inning with a single of her own, marking the seventh hit of the inning for the Bulldogs.

Bethel (17-17, 12-12) responded with one run in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of a pair of walks allowed by Courtney Maynard. The freshman scattered eight hits and got out of two bases-loaded jams, the first of which came in the second inning when BU put three runners on with one just one out. A ground ball to Gutierrez, who flipped the ball from her glove to Lavery at the plate, got the second out before Maynard induced a groundout to second to end the inning.

The Wildcats threatened to score again in the seventh inning, but Maynard (11-8) got another ground-ball out to end the game.

In the first game, CU scored one run in each of the first two innings with Blackwood doubling in Gilliam in the first and White’s opposite field homer in the second.

Bethel scored five unearned runs in the third inning on back-to-back home runs, the first of which was a grand slam.

The Bulldogs were able to scratch out two more runs in the sixth, but left the go-ahead run in scoring position in the seventh inning.

In the doubleheader, White and Gilliam both had four hits, while Blackwood and Gutierrez both had three. White and Blackwood each added three RBIs.

Cumberland travels to Mid-Continent University on Tuesday.
