COLUMBIA, Ky. – Kassydi Montgomery hit a pair of home runs and Brittany Rasmussen belted a three-run shot as well, but Amanda Trampe collected a pair of doubles and three RBIs and Andrea Whelan drove in five runs, as second-ranked Lindsey Wilson swept a doubleheader from Cumberland, 7-4 and 11-2, here Tuesday at Lindsey Wilson Park.
Rasmussen hit her three-run shot and Montgomery drilled a solo homer in the opener and the Bulldogs (7-13, 3-3 Mid-South) put another runner in base in the final inning before dropping a 7-4 decision in the opener. Two costly errors opened the doors for five unearned runs in the second inning of the second contest, an 11-2 Lindsey Wilson victory.
Whelan hit a solo homer in the first game and had a bases-clearing double in the five-run second inning in the second contest as well. Trampe doubled twice, plating runs both times, and scored twice in the second game.
Lyndsey Parden (6-2) picked up the win in the opener for the Blue Raiders, allowing four runs on six hits. She walked three and struck out six. Kristen Abell (5-4) took the loss for Cumberland, giving up six earned runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Jordan Hood (6-2) struck out seven and gave up just three hits in five innings for the win in the second contest. Leah Newsome (2-8) took the loss for CU, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in two-plus innings.
Whelan drilled a solo homer with two outs in the first inning and Trampe, Bailey Mize and Travatia Bowden followed with consecutive singles, plating a run for a 2-0 LWC advantage after an inning in the opening game.
Sydney Fourman drew a leadoff walk and Ericka Clifford reached on a throwing error by Abell on a bunt attempt. Jenna Firestein beat out a bunt as well, loading the bases. Fourman scored on a groundout by Chelsea Showers and Clifford came across on a ground ball from Whelan, extending the Blue Raiders lead to 4-0.
In the fourth Showers drew a one-out walk and went to second on a wild pitch. She scored on a two-out single to left by Trampe.
LWC added two more runs in the fifth, starting with a one-out single by Fourman. Clifford singled to leftcenter and the runners moved up on the throw to third. Firestein grounded to first and Tessa Tomaselli’s throw to the plate was late, with pinch-runner Ashley Evans sliding in ahead of the tag, and Clifford came across on a groundout by Showers for a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the sixth after a leadoff walk to Vienna Benavides and a bunt single from Tomaselli. With one out Rasmussen lifted a high fly ball to left that just cleared the eight-foot wall for her second homer of the season, cutting the deficit to 7-3.
Montgomery drilled a solo homer to leftcenter in the seventh and Benavides followed with a single. Tomaselli was ahead 3-1 in the count before popping up to end the opener, with LWC claiming a 7-4 victory.
Montgomery led off the second contest with a line drive down the rightfield line that just cleared the wall for her fifth home run of the year and an early lead for CU.
The Blue Raiders answered right back in their half of the inning, with Showers singling to center with one out and stealing second. Back-to-back doubles from Trampe and Mize, both to rightcenter, plated a pair of runs for a 2-1 LWC advantage.
Abbi Goedde led off the second inning with a walk for Lindsey Wilson and Hood singled to left with one out. Firestein hit a chopper off the glove of Tomaselli, loading the bases, and Showers grounded to short, but the ball went through the legs of Delgado into leftfield, scoring a run.
Whelan then doubled down the leftfield line, clearing the bases, and Trampe followed with a double to rightcenter, plating another run for a 7-1 Blue Raiders lead.
Cumberland got a run back in the third when Montgomery reached on an error, went to second on a groundout by Benavides and scored on Tomaselli’s single to right.
But LWC answered quickly again, with Goedde hitting a long fly ball to dead center to start the bottom of the inning for an 8-2 lead.
In the fourth Trampe and Bowden were both hit and Fourman walked with two outs, loading the bases. Hood singled to center, scoring two runs, and the ball got under the glove of Madison Gonzalez and rolled to the wall. Firestein then hit a single to the leftside, plating the final run of the game.
