LEBANON, Tenn. – Vienna Benavides and Tessa Tomaselli each posted four hits but Cumberland stranded 13 baserunners and dropped a doubleheader, 9-4 and 4-0, Monday evening to Martin Methodist at East Campus in Pulaski, Tenn.
The Bulldogs (12-26) end the regular season with four games at St. Catharine College in a series that has been shifted to Thursday and Friday this week.
Alley Benefield and Taylor Ferguson each drove in a pair of runs in the first game for the RedHawks (25-17) and Emily Robb tossed a six-hit shutout in the second contest, walking one and getting a pair of doubleplays.
Cumberland stranded six runners in the opener and seven in the second game, with six of those left on base in scoring position. The Bulldogs outhit MMC, 12-9, in the first game as well.
Leah Newsome (6-13) took the loss in the opener, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. MMC’s Brittany Bishop posted the win, giving up three earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts.
Kristen Abell (6-12) gave up four runs on six hits with threw walks to suffer the defeat in the second game.
Martin Methodist scored five times in the first two innings of the first game.
Dharianna Familia reached on an error to start the first and Taylor Moore walked before a single by Nikki Moore loaded the bases. Benefield’s sacrifice fly scored a run and Ferguson’s two-out triple to right plated two more for a quick 3-0 MMC advantage.
In the second Samantha Wilson was hit to start the inning and went to second on a sac bunt by Courtney Grooms. Familia then tripled, scoring a run, and she came across on Moore’s sac fly.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the fifth when Madison Gonzalez singled to left and Giselle Delgado moved her to second with a sac bunt. Katelynn Stoll then doubled to center, scoring Gonzalez, and Kassydi Montgomery’s two-out single plated another run, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
The RedHawks answered in the bottom of the inning, though, starting with three straight singles from Moore, Hodges and Benefield, the last one scoring a run. Taylor Hurford’s RBI single plated pinch-runner Baylee Hammons and Kaycee Hurd’s sac fly scored another. Hurford came across on a double steal with Samantha Wilson for a 9-2 advantage.
In the sixth Tomaselli, Jessica Roper and Gonzalez all singled, with Gonzalez’s hit scoring pinch-runner Kaycee Harris, but a strikeout and a double steal limited the inning to just one run.
Benavides singled with two outs in the second and took second on an errant throw. She scored on Kaleigh Pearce’s single to center for the final run of the contest.
Cumberland was unable to take advantage of a Benavides single and two MMC errors to score in the first inning, but Martin Methodist pushed across a run in the bottom of the frame.
Moore walked with one out and stole second before Allie Garland’s RBI double to leftcenter.
In the third Familia walked to start the inning and went to second on Moore’s sac bunt. Garland’s single to leftcenter scored a run before Benefield belted a two-run homer to rightcenter for a 4-0 MMC lead.
Cumberland stranded two runners in the second inning via a single and a walk and had at least one baserunner in every inning against Robb.
