Phoenix Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Bryan

Lebanon, Tenn.-- Cumberland splits home doubleheader versus Bryan College. Despite cruising through game one with a ten point lead, the Phoenix struggled to make many hits in game two.

Game One:

Cumberland dominated game one with a 12-2 score, recording 11 hits and no errors to close it out in five innings. Ashton Whiles, Anna Lay, Ashtyn Blair, and Abby Chappell each drove in two runs apiece in the effort.

The Phoenix scored all 12 runs in the first inning while pitcher Bailey Griffth dominated in the circle, allowing Bryan to get only one hit.

Both pitchers threw scoreless second innings with Bryan’s Haley Stahl making the only hit on either end.

The Lions got on the board at the top of the third when Stahl scored Stephanie Belvins for a 12-1 score. Carli LaRocque singled to third base, scoring Lily Taylor to add to the Lion’s scoring while Denver Hogrefe held down the plate to keep Cumberland hitless and scoreless.

Despite cutting into the Phoenix lead in the third inning, Griffith shut down the Lions for the next two innings to secure Cumberland’s victory.

Game Two:

The Lions got off to a quick start in game two after struggling on offense in game one. A single and two errors helped load the bases in the top of the first inning and a double from Stahl drove in a pair of runs to get things started. Two batters later, Bumgardner ripped a single through the left side to drive in the third run of the inning giving the Lions a 3-0 lead after one.

After a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning, the Phoenix responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the second. Ashton Whiles hit a leadoff single to begin the frame. Chappell reached on a fielder’s choice and later moved to second on a groundball to the pitcher. Kenzie France finally brought her home on a double to left field, bringing the score to 3-1.

Neither team could find offense the rest of the way despite multiple innings with runners in scoring position as the final score ran 3-1 with the Lions coming out on top.

The Phoenix will be back in action on Thursday as they start conference play against the No. 24 University of the Cumberlands.
