Pitching Propels Phoenix to Doubleheader Sweep over Mount Mercy
Bailey Griffith throw a complete game striking out 10 batters.

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland had gutsy pitching performances to help sweep the doubleheader defeating Mount Mercy 1-0 and 3-2 at Billy Dee Ross Stadium.

Cumberland took game one behind a complete game gem from Bailey Griffith. She tossed the seven-inning shutout scattering six hits while striking out 10 Mustangs.

Jayna Witzany had a good outing in the circle as well throwing six innings in the circle. She gave up six hits and just the one earned run late in the game.

In the second, Cumberland put two runners on as Jacey Hatfield singled and Kenzie France drew a walk, but Witzany was able to get a strikeout to end the threat.

In the third and fourth, both Griffith and Witzany worked around base runners without allowing a run.

In the fifth, the Mustangs led off the inning with a single and an error to put the lead off hitter on second. Griffith punched out the next batter, but on a one-out single the Mustangs tried to draw a rundown in between first and second to score the runner at third. Cumberland played it soundly and got the runner out without allowing the runner to move up. Griffith fanned the next batter to strand the runner at third.

Riding the momentum of stranding the runner on third, Gracie Arnemann led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. She advanced to second on a sac bunt from Anna Lay. With one out, Allie Burleson roped a two-strike single to center to put runners on the corners. Ashton Blair smoked a ball right down the line at the third baseman holding the go-ahead runner at third. With two outs and two strikes, Whiled delivered the go-ahead RBI on a base hit to right to give Griffith enough run support in this game.

In the seventh, the Mustangs put a runner on with one-out, but Griffith used back-to-back strikeouts to end the game with a 1-0 win.

In game two, Cumberland took the lead in the top of the third inning with Blair hitting a single through the right side, driving in Burleson and Brylee Bartley. Whiles followed with  a single up the middle to score Burleson and put Cumberland on top 2-0.

Cumberland game two starter Emily Cooper was cruising through the early part of the game. She gave up her first hit with two outs in the fourth. Mount Mercy in the fifth used that to propel them into two run inning in the bottom of the fifth.  Rylee Goodfellow hit a two-RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 and end Cooper’s day. Reliever Kaitlyn Higgins came out and left the bases loaded picking up two outs.

Cumberland regained the lead in the bottom half. Burleson led off the inning with a double into right center allowing Abby Chappell to hit her in for the go-ahead run.

Higgins only allowed one baserunner in the sixth and seventh innings to pick up the win in relief.

Cumberland is set to be in action this weekend on the road at Thomas More. Weather may play a factor in to game times for this weekend, so stayed tuned to the website for updates.
