Bulldogs season ends, 3-0
LEBANON, Tenn. – Taylor Denney recorded 20 assists and Amanda Twomey had 28 digs, but Cumberland was unable to keep its momentum in a 3-0 loss to Trevecca Tuesday at the TranSouth Volleyball Championships. The Bulldogs were eliminated from the tournament and ended the season 20-18 overall.
Cumberland posted just a .084 hitting percentage in the match, committing 21 errors along the way. Trevecca avenged a 3-2 loss to the Bulldogs in the opening match of the tournament for both teams on Monday.
Katie Ball and Tracy Smallwood both had nine kills and Joni Simpson added seven for CU, while Ball and Denney both recorded 11 digs.
After the teams were tied at five in the first game, Trevecca pulled ahead slightly and then continually added to the lead as the game progressed en route to a 25-18 victory.
Trevecca jumped out 5-1 in the second game but the Bulldogs eventually fought back, tying the score at 13 thanks to a pair of kills from Ball and Smallwood as well as a kill by Kailen Harris and a service ace from Kristen Staback.
But TNU scored the next four points and 12 of the final 15 of the game for a 25-16 victory.
Cumberland continued to fight throughout, but especially in game three. The teams tied five times in the first 14 points because Trevecca used an 8-1 run to take a 15-8 lead. CU cut into the deficit but still trailed 21-16 before making a late run before a pair of kills by Simpson cut the TNU lead to three.
Two more kills from Samantha Bellar sliced the TNU advantage to one at 22-21. Another Bellar kill and three Trojan errors gave Cumberland a slight lead at 25-24. The teams battled back and forth until TNU scored two straight for a 29-27 game three victory and the match.
