Gass sisters sign with CU

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Cumberland University volleyball team signed a pair of players for next season with the addition of Meghan and Mackenzie Gass of Collierville, Tenn., head coach Dwayne Deering announced Tuesday.
The sisters, who played for coach Lisa Lewis at Collierville High School, are the first signees for the 2010 CU squad. Meghan spent the last year at Carson-Newman College and will enroll at Cumberland in the spring, while Mackenzie is set to graduate from CHS in May.
Meghan Gass, a three-year letterwinner at Collierville, saw action in 10 matches at Carson-Newman this past season. As a senior in high school, she was named the Class AAA District 15 Player of the Year and was selected to District All-Tournament and Region All-Tournament teams. The two-time Best of the Preps/Shelby Suburban All-Metro Team member recorded 3,029 career assists, which ranks third in TSSAA history. From the service line, Meghan tallied 199 aces, including 111 her junior year.
Mackenzie Gass earned All-District honors three straight years and was named All-Region as a junior. The four-year letterwinner garnered Most Valuable Player accolades in both the district and region tournaments this past season. Mackenzie was selected to the Commercial Appeal Best of the Preps/All-Metro Team twice and was picked as the newspaper’s Player of the Week on two occasions. She finished her career with 1,295 kills and 224 service aces in 176 matches.
Meghan, who plays setter, and Mackenzie, a middle hitter/outside hitter, are the daughters of Kenny and Brenda Gass.
