Union spoils Cumberland’s Senior Night

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland University fell in three sets to Union University Tuesday night in the regular-season finale at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
Cumberland (17-12, 6-8 TranSouth Conference) had an attack percentage of just .093 in the contest, its lowest of the season.
Union (25-8, 8-5) used a 6-1 stretch early in the match to break a tie and build a five-point lead, but CU battled back to force four more ties, the latest of which came at 20-20. However the visitors scored five of the last six points to close out the set with a 25-21 win. The set saw eight ties, but only one lead change. Both teams finished the set with 13 kills, most coming from a single player. Kaysi Arnold of Greenbrier, Tenn., had six for the Volleydawgs, while Macela Madeira collected seven for Union.
A pair of big runs propelled Union to a 25-14 win in the second set. The visitors started the set scoring five of the first six points and closed the game on a 9-1 run. Cumberland closed to within three points at 13-10 with a kill by Greenbrier High School product Kayla Arnold. She finished with four kills on the night and added one block.
Cumberland built its largest lead of the match in the third set with a 16-10 advantage before Union battled back to tie the game at 20-20 and closed with five of the last six points to win 25-21.
Prior to the game, three players were recognized as part of senior night, including Amanda Adcock of Sparta, Tenn., who recorded a pair aces. Kaysi Arnold paced CU with 10 kills, while Courtney Zigman of Aurora, Ohio and Cookeville, Tenn., product Taylor Denney had 14 and 10 assists, respectively. Senior Jordan Pescatore of Birmingham, Ala., finished with 11 digs.
Cumberland is off until the beginning of the TranSouth Championships next Monday at Trevecca Nazarene University. The Volleydawgs will enter the tournament as the fifth seed.
