Trevecca completes season sweep of CU

LEBANON, Tenn. – Despite an error-free, 12-kill performance from freshman Kaysi Arnold, Cumberland University couldn’t snap out of its struggles with rival Trevecca Nazarene University as the Trojans completed the season sweep of the Bulldogs for the fourth straight season.

Trevecca, which won the previous meeting 3-1 last month, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 first-set. After the two teams traded points on each of the first seven serves, Trevecca won five straight to open up a four-point cushion, but the Volleydawgs battled back to tie the game at 9-9. TNU matched its largest lead of the game again after four straight points. From that point, CU wasn’t able to claw completely back into the set, getting as close as one-point six times but never overtaking the visitors.

The Bulldogs only managed a .128 attack percentage in the second set as they committed seven errors, including on back-to-back points twice. The second occurrence gave Trevecca an 18-14 lead. A kill by Greenbrier High School product Kayla Arnold cut the deficit to three points, but CU wouldn’t get any closer in the 25-20 loss.

A 7-1 run early in the third set provided the Trojans with a large enough cushion to cruise through the decisive game as TNU won 25-16 to complete the sweep.

Cumberland finished the match with a .156 kill, marking the third time in the last five matches that the Bulldogs have failed to hit above .200.

Cookeville High School product Taylor Denney had 15 assists for the Bulldogs, while Courtney Zigman of Aurora, Ill., had 11. Jordan Pescatore of Birmingham, Ala., collected 10 digs.

The Bulldogs host Bethel University Wednesday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center. The Wildcats defeated CU 3-2 in their previous meeting this year. Following the Bethel match, Cumberland will go on the road Thursday before returning home to close out the season with seven straight matches in the Cedar City.
