LEBANON, Tenn. – For the third consecutive year, Cumberland University has been picked to finish sixth in the TranSouth Conference Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league Tuesday.

Two-time defending regular season champion Freed-Hardeman is the preseason favorite after going undefeated in conference play last season. The Lions (62 total points), who have lost only four conference matches in the last three years, garnered six of the eight first-place votes and are followed by Union University (56), which received two first-place votes. Union claimed the 2008 TSAC Tournament championship.

The rest of the top five spots are taken by Trevecca Nazarene (42), Lyon College (39) and Bethel University (29), respectively, meaning that each team in the top five is predicted to finish where it ended last year.

Cumberland and Martin Methodist each received 25 points in the poll to tie for sixth. The Bulldogs, coming off a 21-18 overall mark and 6-8 conference record a year ago, ended the 2008 campaign in sixth place, while Martin Methodist finished 2-29 in seventh.

Mid-Continent, which has won only two conference matches since joining the TranSouth in 2006, was picked to finish last with 10 points.

CU opens the 2009 season by hosting the annual Volleydawg Classic Aug. 28-29 at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
