Cumberland set to host Volleydawg Classic

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland opens the 2011 volleyball season this weekend, hosting the Volleydawg Classic at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs will play four matches, taking on Faulkner University, Reinhardt University and the University of Pikeville.

Head coach Dewayne Deering heads into his 24th season at CU with a very young team, including seven true freshmen and only six returning letterwinners. Many of the new players as well as several others who have played sparingly in their careers will see opportunities for action in the tournament.

“We are still experimenting with lineups and different positions and will see several different players at those positions this weekend,” Deering said. “We are subbing several people, platooning on the front row and back row, and we have a couple of people hurt as well, which will give even more players chance to play.

“I’m very excited about the tournament and the weekend. It will give our young players some experience before our first conference match Tuesday against Mid-Continent.”
