LEBANON, Tenn. – Mackenzie Gass tied her career-high with 15 kills and Cumberland overcame deficits to win the final two sets in a 3-0 victory over Lyon College on Friday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
Gass posted almost half of the team’s 32 kills in the match and the Bulldogs (11-20, 4-8 TranSouth) took advantage of 17 errors and eight reception errors by the Scots (12-19, 3-10). Brooks Bowers added 11 digs and Amanda Wiseman recorded five kills and eight digs for CU.
The Bulldogs started the match quickly, disposing of the visitors, 25-13, in the opening set. CU jumped ahead 9-1 and never looked back, with Rylee Butler and Gass and Butler and Karli Collins combining for blocks along with three attack errors, a ball handling error and a service error by Lyon.
Jaclyn Jordan added two of her four kills in the middle of the set and Gass finished off the Game One victory with her fourth kill.
The second set was a completely different story, with the Scots taking the early lead and holding it until the very end.
Kills by Suzanne Fincham and Devan Walker helped LC take a 4-1 edge, but CU tied it at seven with kills from Gass and Lauren Carter. A 5-0 spurt by the visitors that included blocks from Walker and Danielle Reed gave Lyon a 16-11 lead and the advantage grew to 21-14 after a kill from Reed.
But Cumberland came storming back at the end of the set, starting with three straight errors by the Scots. Wiseman’s service ace cut the deficit to four and two more Lyon miscues made it 23-21.
Fincham’s kill gave LC set point, but three kills from Gass, an error and a block from Butler and Gass pushed the Bulldogs to a 26-24 triumph. Gass tallied eight of her 15 kills in the match during the set.
CU led early in the final set, taking a 7-1 advantage after four errors by the Scots and three service aces for the Bulldogs. Lyon fought back, though, eventually tying the score at nine behind three kills from Fincham and two by Chelsea Hinton.
The Bulldogs inched back in front 13-10, but LC again tied it at 15 and then took the lead with two more kills by Fincham. A pair of kills from Wiseman and one by Gass pushed CU back in front and Wiseman and Carter added kills in the final points before another ball-handling error, the 10th of the match for the Scots, ended the set.
Meghan Gass led the Bulldogs with 16 assists and Lacey Gregory added eight.
Cumberland plays in the Halloween Bash on Saturday at Centre College in Danville, Ky., taking on Piedmont College and the host Colonels. The Bulldogs play their final two regular season matches next week, both at home, against Union University on Tuesday and Bethel University on Wednesday.
