CU earns victory at Conference Crossover

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland volleyball opened the Mid-South Conference Crossover Friday night with a win in Georgetown, Ky. The Bulldogs defeated the University of Pikeville in three sets.

The Bulldogs won by scores of 25-28, 25-23 and 25-16. Jacklyn Munoz had a match-high 13 kills and Mackenzie Gass tallied 11. Caitlin Carlander and Desirae Burris combined for 30 assists, while Brooke Bowers totaled 28 digs and Jenna Pavan had 16.

CU (6-13) did not fare as well in their second match of the day, as they were overcome by the University of Rio Grande in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17. The Bulldogs struggled mightily at the net against the RedStorm, accumulating a -.019 hitting percentage for the match. Rylee Butler led the team with five kills and Gass added four. Burris handed out 10 assists, while Bowers accumulated 20 digs and Munoz had 11.

In the third and final match of the Crossover, CU was downed by Shawnee State in three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-20. Once again, the Bulldogs could not get it going at the net, hitting just .079 on the match, compared to .426 for the Bears. Gass led CU with nine kills and Munoz accumulated six. Burris supplied 21 assists and Bowers delivered 12 digs.

Cumberland travels to St. Catharine College tomorrow for a 6 p.m. CT match.
