
LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland University volleyball coach Dwayne Deering announced the signing of Sheridan Jones and Laura Peavy, a pair of standouts from Faulkner State Community College in Alabama, to scholarship papers for the 2013 season.
Peavy recorded 104 digs and 22 service aces in 82 sets this season for the Sun Chiefs, who posted a 27-9 overall record, 12-2 in the Alabama Community College Conference. Faulkner State reached the NJCAA National Tournament in 2012. As a freshman she posted 206 kills, 82 digs and 12 service aces in 106 sets for coach Dr. Ritchie Dulaney, with the Sun Chiefs finishing the year 17-8, 8-6 in the ACCC.
The Gulf Shores, Ala., native was a four-year letterwinner for coach Wing Brett at Gulf Shores High School, breaking the school record for career assists with 1,002. She earned All-County honors as a junior and senior and Alabama Volleyball Coaches Association Second Team 5A All-State accolades as a senior.
Peavy also earned four letters in basketball, garnering All-County honors her final three years at GSHS. She is the daughter of Donnie Peavy and Eric and Lisa Jacobson. Her cousin, Jake Peavy, pitches in the Major Leagues, currently for the Chicago White Sox.
Jones registered 70 kills, 16 aces, nine digs and 16 total blocks in 48 sets played this season and netted 131 kills, 15 service aces, 23 digs and 58 total blocks in 101 sets as a freshman at FSCC.
The Gadsden, Ala., native served as Team Captain for two years and was voted Most Improved for coach Christine Ward at Gadsden City High School. She lettered four years in volleyball and softball and one in swimming and basketball at GCHS and was named Best Offensive Player in softball as a senior.
She is the daughter of Stacy Jones and Terri Jones. Her father played baseball at Auburn for three years and in Major League professional organizations for nine seasons.
Jones and Peavy join FSCC teammates Kasi Wells and McCrea Barney along with Ashton Perez, Michelle Daniels and Jenny Daniels in this year’s recruiting class.
