Tigers defeat Phoenix in four
Maci Lerno recorded a double-double in Cumberland's 3-1 loss to Campbellsville University, posting 14 kills and 13 digs on Tuesday, October 18.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland dropped a 3-1 decision to Campbellsville University on Tuesday, October 18 at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center with Maci Lerno posting a double-double recording 14 kills and 13 digs and Kara Snell tallying 21 digs in the mid-south conference match-up.

Campbellsville would start off with three straight points in the third set, before the Phoenix would respond to knot the game at six with points from Michelle Evans, Mikayla Wickham and Amanda Worrell.

The Tigers would then take a two point lead, but Cumberland would tie the game at nine and two attack errors on Campbellsville would give the squad an 11-9 lead. Four consecutive points for Campbellsville would put them back on top, 13-11.

A kill from Evans and a service ace from Jena Goodman would even the score at 15 before the Tigers would go on a four point spurt to take the lead again, 19-15. A point from Wickham and Worrell wouldn’t be enough as Campbellsville would score the final three points to win the frame, 25-22.

Wickham would open up the scoring in the second stanza, and would stay in the lead with a point from Worrell. The Tigers would tie the score at three and then another kill from Worrell would put Cumberland back on top, 6-5.

Two service aces for Campbellsville would help them knot the score at ten and both teams would go point-for-point up until the score as even at 14. Three straight points for the Tigers would put them back in the lead, 17-14.

A kill from Lerno and a service ace from Rachel Clement including a few attack errors on the Tigers would all play in Cumberland’s favor, tying the score at 20. Lerno would then tie the score at 22 and an attack error on Campbellsville and a kill from Evans and Wickham would help Cumberland claim the second set, 25-23.

Cumberland would score three straight points to open the third set, and then continue to extend their lead by three with two points from Wickham to make the score, 7-4. Two kills from Evans and a service ace from Sara Glassman would keep Cumberland in the lead, 14-11.

The Phoenix would then score five points in a row, with a kill from Worrell, Lerno, and two from Abby Akins to extend Cumberland’s lead, 20-13. The Tigers would then go on to score seven consecutive points to knot the score at 20.

An attack error on Campbellsville and a kill from Lerno wouldn’t be enough to stop the Tigers comeback scoring the final three points to take the set, 25-22.

Campbellsville would score the first point of the fourth frame and a point for the Phoenix would tie it. Five different players for Cumberland would post points to then knot the score at nine. But, four straight points for the Tigers would put them back in the lead, 13-10.

Wickham would post one point before Campbellsville would go on an eight point spurt to take a 10 point lead, 21-11. Two kills from Worrell and one from Lerno would put the Phoenix behind by eight, but three points for the Tigers would help them secure the final frame, 25-14.

Cumberland returns to play on October 25 against host Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky. at 5 p.m.
