Markovic, Nalovic pace Phoenix in sweep at Fisk

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Isidora Markovic posted 12 kills and Masa Nalovic added 11, as Cumberland won for the fourth time in five matches with a 3-0 sweep of Fisk University here Friday night in volleyball action at Johnson Gymnasium.

Markovic tallied seven kills and a service ace in the third and final set, helping the Phoenix (9-6) hold off the Bulldogs from taking a set. She registered three kills in a five-point span in the middle of the set and she and Abby Akins accounted for all four Cumberland points later in the set.

Markovic and Amanda Worrell collected kills and Markovic had a service ace late in the set, but a kill by KyLee Thompson and a block from Skye Faucher and Mia Owens along with a CU error pulled Fisk within 24-22, but an error by Owens ended the match.

Akins recorded eight kills and Mikayla Wickham added eight for the Phoenix while Sara Glassman and Rachel Glassman combined for 42 assists. Taylor Kasper and Kara Snell collected a combined 25 digs as well for CU.

Alexis Emanuel paced the Bulldogs with eight kills and Thompson added 18 assists and eight digs.

Kills by Nalovic and Markovic gave CU an early 3-2 edge in the first set and a block by Markovic increased the lead to 7-4. Nalovic added consecutive kills for a 12-7 advantage and another Fisk error made it 13-8 for the Phoenix, forcing a timeout by the home team.

The Bulldogs reeled off three straight points after the timeout, but another kill by Nalovic and two straight errors by Fisk pushed the lead to 16-11. Kills from Markovic and Caprisha Webster made it 19-12 and kills by Amanda Worrell and Abby Akins along with a Fisk error forced another timeout by the home team with Cumberland ahead, 22-14.

Fisk pulled as close as 23-18 thanks to a pair of kills by Alexis Emanuel and block assists by Emanuel and Skye Faucher, but a big kill from the middle by Akins and a service ace from Kara Snell ended the set for the Phoenix, 25-18.

Nalovic posted five kills in the set and Mikayla Wickham added four, as Cumberland hit .231 compared to .034 for the Bulldogs.

Cumberland started quickly in the second set with kills from Worrell and Nalovic and a solo block by Nalovic. Snell added a kill from the backline and Markovic posted another for a 7-4 CU edge.

Two errors from Fisk and three service aces by Jena Goodman increased the lead to 12-4 before Emanuel ended the run with a kill for the Bulldogs. Cumberland added three more points with kills from Wickham and Webster and an error by Fisk, making it 15-5 for the visitors.

Fisk pulled within 17-9 thanks to three Cumberland errors, but kills from Akins and Worrell and a block by the same duo forced a second timeout by the home team with CU leading, 20-10.

Markovic and Nalovic posted kills, as did Webster, before a solo block from Markovic ended the set for CU, 25-12. Markovic recorded three kills and 1.5 blocks in the set and Nalovic and Webster each netted two kills. The Phoenix hit an even better .296 in the set.

Kills from Markovic and Caprisha Webster gave CU an early 5-2 edge in the final set, but errors but the Phoenix kept Fisk in the match. Wickham posted a kill and Akins had two for an 11-8 lead.

Markovic recorded three more kills for a 15-11 advantage, but two errors gave Fisk points again before Akins and Markovic combined for four kills and a 20-16 lead.

Kills by Sydnei Patton and Owens and a block from Owens and Kennedi Hulittle pulled the Bulldogs within 20-19, but again Markovic came through with a kill and a service ace before a kill by Worrell made it 24-19, setting up the final sequence.

Cumberland returns to Mid-South Conference play next weekend, traveling to Shawnee State on Friday and the University of Pikeville on Saturday. The Phoenix return home September 26 to face the University of the Cumberlands at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
