Lebanon, Tenn.--The Phoenix posts a dominant 3-0 sweep over the Shawnee State Bears, their second conference sweep in a row.
Hazel Konkel had an outstanding match, leading all players with 13 kills and a fantastic .545 attacking percentage. Harlee Kate Reid recorded nine kills in the win, while Bianca Rodriquez led in assists with 22.
The Phoenix played strong from the start, earning the first four points of set one during which Nicole Bott recorded three service aces. Cumberland held that lead for the rest of the set, expanding it as far as eight points with a 22-14 scoreboard. Konkel was unstoppable from the middle, earning six of her 13 kills in the set. The Phoenix took the set 25-19, when Izzy Curcio nailed a hard driven ball down the line.
The Bears put up more of a fight in set two, with the first few points going back-and-forth between the two teams. Two errors from the Bears at the 4-4 scoreboard gave the Phoenix an edge that they held onto for the remainder of the match. The lead was protected by huge kills from Konkel out of the middle as well as three back-to-back points from Laci Reese on the right side. Bott registered yet another ace to end the set with a score of 25-18.
Shawnee State fought hard to force a fourth set, taking their first lead of the match in set three. The teams were neck and neck until around the 9-10 score point, when the Phoenix were able to capitalize on a few Shawnee State mishits. The later half of the set was run mostly by Lauren Galvan, Konkel, and Curcio, as they all put away hard driven balls to secure their team’s advantage. The Bears went on a late four point run to threaten the Phoenix lead, but a kill from Curcio sent Galvan on an important service run that lasted for five points. Cumberland took the set with another 25-19 score.
The Phoenix improve their record to 5-2 in conference and 12-4 overall. This is the fourth time Cumberland has swept a conference opponent in three sets this season.
Cumberland will be back in action next Thursday, October 6 when they take on the University of the Cumberlands on the road.
