LEBANON, Tenn. – Allysia Bailey scored 16 points and Ashley Whitmore netted 13, but Cumberland fell behind early and never recovered, falling 91-61 to top-ranked Union University in women’s quarterfinal action of the TranSouth Championships Wednesday night in Jackson, Tenn.
The loss ends the season for Cumberland (9-18), who will lose just one regular from this season’s club. First-year head coach Jeremy Lewis returns nine letterwinners from this year’s club as well as Kristi Landers, who started the first four games of the year before an injury sidelined her for the rest of the season.
Union (30-1) scored the first nine points of the game, five from TranSouth Player of the Year Kaitlin Dudley. Cumberland cut the deficit to 15-10 after a Bailey field goal with 11:56 remaining in the first period, but the home team answered with 11 straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers from Kayla Hudson.
Union led 46-27 at intermission and held a 20-plus point lead for almost the entire second half.
Bailey made 7-of-12 from the field while Whitmore posted just her third double figure scoring game of the season and the first since January 14 against Blue Mountain. Tamara Gonzalez hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points.
Dudley led all scorers with 19 points and paced five Union players in double digits. Jessica Graves made four 3-pointers and had 16 points, while Lavanda Ross netted 12 points and Hudson and Zeinab Chan both registered 11 points.
