LEBANON, Tenn. – A career night for Tamara Gonzalez helped lead Cumberland University past Fisk University in the Rosa Stokes Classic Saturday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center. The Bulldogs won 76-50 to improve to 5-2 on the year and 2-0 at home.
Gonzalez, a sophomore from Asuncion, Paraguay, went 5-of-7 from 3-point range and totaled 24 points. Her previous highest point total was 19 in a game last year against Lyon College when she made four treys.
She made back-to-back 3-pointers in a 36-second span of the second half that was a part of a 12-2 stretch for the Bulldogs. Gonzalez also had a layup and Allysia Bailey had the other four Cumberland points during the run to finish with 15 points, 11 of which came during the second half.
The Bulldogs led by 11 at intermission, but neither team took control of the game in the early minutes, exchanging the lead six times before CU gained the advantage for good at the 8:43 mark with a layup by Angie Wells. The bucket was part of an 18-4 run that began when the Bulldogs were trailing by three points. Brittany Cash scored eight of her 13 points during the stretch, including a 3-pointer from five feet behind the line.
The Bulldogs will be off until December 29-30 when they host the Cumberland Classic. CU will play Tennessee Wesleyan and University of the Cumberlands during the event.
