NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ashley Whitmore posted a double-double in a losing effort as Cumberland University fell to Talladega College 52-49 in the Pops Duncan Classic at Trevecca Nazarene University.

The Bulldogs (1-1) battled back from a 14-point halftime deficit, using a 20-4 run out of the locker room to take their first lead of the game. Seven different CU players scored during the span, which took more than 11 minutes off the second-half clock. Whitmore totaled five points during the stretch and finished with 17 points. The junior from Antioch, Tenn., added a dozen rebounds, nine of which were on the offensive glass.

Cumberland was hampered by poor free throw shooting down the stretch, going only 4-of-11 from the charity stripe in the second half. The Tornadoes knocked down all six of their free throws in the first half and 9-of-10 after intermission.

The only lead of the game for CU came at 39-37 on a shot by Kristi Landers of Cordova, Tenn. The two-point advantage lasted only 19 seconds as Talladega College made a shot on its ensuing possession and both ends of a 1-and-1 after a Bulldog foul.

Simone Ryan also pulled down 12 rebounds for Cumberland and scored seven points. Keshia Brown chipped in seven points as well.

Morgan Bennett paced Talladega College with 18 points, while Ebony Richardson and Whitney Love each contributed 11.

The Bulldogs return to Trevecca again Saturday and will continue play in the Pops Duncan Classic with a matchup against Bryan College at Noon.
