Cowan's four 3-pointers lead CU victory

LEBANON, Tenn. – Casie Cowan hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points, leading four players in double figures in Cumberland’s 62-45 victory over Bryan College in women’s basketball action Monday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center. For her efforts Cowan was named the Music City Star of the Game.

Cumberland (5-3) started game with a 12-1 run and led by 13 at the half. But the Lions (5-4) scored eight straight points in the middle of the second half, including four from Anna Thomas, to pull within 43-34 with 10:12 remaining in the game.

Cumberland answered with a 10-2 spurt, with Ashley Whitmore and Jessica Pace scoring all 10 points for CU. The Bulldogs pulled away from there, with Pace scoring 11 of her 15 points in the second half. Whitmore and Yalonda Davis each netted 10 points for the Bulldogs, who won in their first contest in nine days.

CU forced 22 turnovers by the visitors and turned those into 22 points. The Bulldogs also outscored Bryan, 28-10, in the paint.

Macy Kilgore led the Lions with 13 points while Sara Barnette added 11 for Bryan.

The Bulldogs started the game with a 12-1 spurt, with Davis and Pace each scoring four points. The Lions missed their first nine shots of the contest and did not make a field goal until a Jenna Ray jumper with 11:56 remaining in the period.

But CU went a little over six minutes without a field goal in the middle of the half, misfiring on seven consecutive shots before a Davis layup with 8:50 left in the period. Bryan did not take advantage of the cold spell and the Bulldogs took a 29-16 advantage into intermission.

Cowan hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first half and scored a game-high 10 points.

Cumberland plays the back end of the home-and-home with Bryan on Thursday in Dayton at 5 p.m. CT.
