Sexton Named MSC Defensive Player of the Year

Lebanon, Tenn.-- Keara Sexton is named the Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Lindsey Freeman earns Second Team All-MSC honors, announced by the league officials on Thursday.

In her senior campaign, Sexton started in all 28 games as the primary ball handler for the Phoenix. She leads Cumberland in steals with 33 and is averaging 1.2 steals per game. 

Sexton posted double-figure points in 10 games this season, averaging 8.2 points per game. She hit 16 three pointers while also adding 74 rebounds and six blocks to her line. 

Sexton was also named to the Mid-South Conference Second Team- her first time being recognized with All-MSC honors. 

Freeman garnered All-MSC Second Team recognition for the second year in a row. Freeman was the only Phoenix to average double-figure points this season with 10.4 per game. 

She shot 43.5% from the field and 42.9% behind the arc, while also leading her team in rebounds with 5.3 per game. 

15 Cumberland women’s basketball student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Mid-South team, the second highest count in the conference. The honor is presented to athletes with sophomore or greater standing in the classroom with a 3.25 grade-point-average or better: Clair Belcher, Lucy Chilcutt, Tierra Davis, Lindsey Freeman, Alyssa Goehring, Kayla Gordon, Josie Harville, Sky Johnson, Iya Jones, Britany Miller, Abby Morgan, Kennedy Powell, Alaina Rongos, Jana Claire Swafford, and Teoria Woods.

Lucy Chilcutt was named a member of the 2022-23 MSC Women's Basketball Champions of Character Team.
